My Canary’s Gonna Run the J-L-A

My box of comics arrived today, a month’s worth of sequential goodness.  All my favorite manga series were in there.  And two (2!) issues of Justice League, and the latest issues of Supergirl, Buffy, Blue Beetle, Birds of Prey — everything awesome and wonderful.

And from early hints and allegations…

Black Canary’s going to be running the new JLA.  *fangirl*SQUEE!*

Along with THAT, anyone who has ever complained ever about how Brad Meltzer writes the DCU can bite me, because he wrote the most awesome, amazing, pay-attention-to-continuity, Roy-accepts-his-invite scene in the history of comics with the most massive shout-out to Dinah’s linchpin role — and linchpin moment — in the Hard Travelin’ Heroes saga… *happy*

The new respect for Black Canary is all Gail, y’know, with maybe a little bit of Devin Grayson’s Arsenal mini as influence, and the fact that Brad has used that in his JLA?  Rock. On.

The best Justice League stories always have character work in them.  They’re never just about the widescreen action; they’re about the people and how they interact, and this new incarnation completely works on that level.  And the action rocks pretty hard, too.

Comics for 25 April 2007

A big comic-buying week for me!  I’m pretty excited about a lot of these titles, too.

52 Week #51
Only One More Issue!  I hope Countdown can come close to the greatness of this series.

Blue Beetle Vol 6 #14
*loves*

Gals Vol 10 TP
Last issue!  I’ll miss Kotobuki Ran and her friends and all of their crazy, wacky hijinks, but I’m sure it’ll wrap-up great.  I note that this is one of the few manga series I’ve seen which preserves the Japanese naming conventions (family name first, personal name last) and honorifics were left on.  I don’t have a preference either way; when English language things are translated, “our” names are often reversed to their style and honorifics added, so I don’t see this as being in any way disrespectful any more than translating the works in the first place is.  I just enjoyed seeing it done here.

June Comics Order

I just placed my order for June’s comics which I have shipped by my old comic shop, Discount Comic Book Service.  They do an awesome job of packing things up and sending them safely.  I sometimes think they go a little overboard, but I guess that’s better than the opposite.  What follows is what I ordered.  I seem to be evenly split between monthly comics and manga collections.  I resisted the siren call of tchotchkes and t-shirts this month, though it was a near thing ;)

Comics for 18 April 2007

On Words of Prey, in all its incarnations, we have a weekly thread entitled “Queen of Days.”  This was an homage/adaptation of the same thread I believe is still going on over on Dixonverse.net where some of us first met online.  Basically, it’s a list of the comics we plan to buy each week on the “Queen of Days,” Wednesday — the day new comics are released.

Long story short, here’s my list for this week:
